Even with no remembrance, people stop by Ryder Park memorial
DEWITT --
The Town of DeWitt, which has one of the area’s most prominent 9/11 memorials, did not stage a formal remembrance ceremony for the anniversary of the World Trade Center terror attacks this year.People visiting Ryder Park were not happy at the lack of ceremony. “Well, you know, it was a very, very life changing day,” one woman told us. ‘It’s sad,” said another visitor. “People should remember.”
There was an impromptu wreath-laying, at the same time as the planes hit the twin towers. It was organized by Joe Chiarenza, Junior and Elaine Lostumbo, who also will take over the committee that has organized formal remembrances in DeWitt for the past ten years. As Chiarenza told us, ‘it’s time to hand it on to new folks.’ Committee members from the past are getting older, and some town officials involved have been tied up with other matters, including the pending DeWitt/East Syracuse police merger.
The new committee says it will get to work in January to do memorials for 2013 and onward.
