OSWEGO -- Fall officially starts Saturday, September 22 and temperatures are starting to fall, but the Oswego County Public Health Director says mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus are still present at test sites around the county. The county is urging residents to continue taking measures to protect themselves against mosquito bites.
Earlier this month, Oswego County sprayed the Big Bay and Toad Harbor swamp areas for mosquitoes, but the Health Director warns spraying doesn't kill all mosquitoes. Even though the cooler temperatures mean mosquitoes are less active, they're haven't completely disappeared.
The Oswego County Health Department says people should use insect repellents when they're outside and wear pants and long-sleeve shirts. You can also help reduce the mosquito population around your home by emptying pails, swimming pool covers, flower pots and any other containers filled with standing water around your home and yard.
