EAST SYRACUSE -- Central New York police officers could be spotted on rooftops across CNY on Friday but they weren't investigating crimes, they were raising money for a good cause.

Police teamed up with several Dunkin' Donuts for the first annual Cops On Top fundraiser for the Special Olympics of New York.

At the East Syracuse Dunkin’ Donuts, officers took turns waving from the roof to raise awareness about the fundraiser. Dunkin' Donuts chipped in and offered free coupons for coffee or donuts to those making a donation to help the Special Olympics.

Upstate Medical University Police Deputy Chief Paul Waltz says all the money raised makes it easier for Special Olympic athletes to continue to compete.

"These special olympic athletes have a special place in our hearts and to see them compete and to be able to be part of that is very rewarding," says Chief Waltz.

Besides East Syracuse, Dunkin’ Donuts stores in Liverpool, North Syracuse, Oswego, Canastota, Ithaca and Lansing also took part in the fundraiser. As of 11:00 a.m. Friday morning, police at the East Syracuse Dunkin’ Donuts had already raised close to $3,000 dollars.
