SYRACUSE -- Syracuse leaders and neighbors came together on Saturday at Destiny USA for a conference on the State of the Black Community. The event featured panel discussions and speeches.
It also brought together neighbors, and then split them into groups to discuss major issues. The groups will meet throughout the year to brainstorm solutions to some of the community's toughest problems.
Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler was one of the speakers at the event. "This is indeed a state of emergency," said Chief Fowler. "We have issues that are taking place within the African-American community that desperately need to change. And now you have people here who are showing a commitment to that change."
Chief Fowler added that people left the conference with specific strategies to better their community. He said that moving forward, they will develop action plans to address the problems pointed out at the conference.
