BINGHAMTON (AP) -- A federal jury has awarded $2 million to a police officer who sued the Ithaca Police Department, claiming city officials discriminated against him after he filed human rights complaints.

The Ithaca Journal reports that the jury returned its verdict Thursday in federal court in Binghamton in the case of Christopher Miller's claim that he faced employment discrimination. Miller sued the city of Ithaca for $19 million, saying he was denied promotions because he was white and that the city retaliated against him when he filed human rights complaints.

Miller's attorney said the city's hiring code is discriminatory in favor of minorities.

The attorney representing the city in the lawsuit said Miller abused his power as a police officer and never took accountability for his actions.
