SYRACUSE -- To most people, the spectacular fall colors usually signal the end of the planting season.
Certified landscaper Jim Sollecito says now is actually a good time to add a little late season color to your flower garden, and those looking to plant have several options.
"The ground is nice and warm, and we are getting adequate rainfall. You can plant Hasta, Day Lilies. There is a bunch of day Lillies flowering right now," he says.
Sollecito says fall is also a good time to plant bulbs, but you need to make sure you plant them correctly.
"You want to dig something wider. You want to add a good amount of organic content. We like compost in the planting pit and make sure even if it looks like it is going to rain, you give the plant a good drink," he says.
Sollecito says plants should bloom for a couple of more weeks but their roots will continue to grow much longer than that.
"The roots are going to grow unti the time the ground freezes which is about Christmas time, so by planting something now we can actually gain a full half year over planting something in the spring," he says.
