CORTLAND COUNTY -- Central New York is bracing for potential impact from Hurricane Sandy. In Cortland County, Brenda Derusso of the Emergency Management Office says they're in the process of setting up an emergency operations center in Cortland.

The Emergency Management Office is keeping all of the fire departments up to date and making sure they're all prepared. Fire personnel may be needed to direct traffic at intersections should there be power outages.

Highway departments are also on call; one of their many tasks is to keep storm drains free of leaves, and any other debris that could clog them.

Derusso says the big threat her office is winds and the potential for long term power outages.

"We don't anticipate a flood event," she says, after a briefing with the National Weather Service around 9 a.m. Monday morning. There is no sandbagging taking place at this time.
