SYRACUSE -- Police say more victims are coming forward, saying they were sold counterfeit tickets to the upcoming Georgetown-SU basketball game next month.

Jeremiah Maher, the Associate Athletic Director of Ticket Operations at the Carrier Dome says in this particular scam, the wrong date was printed on the tickets.

Your safest bet is to buy the ticket through the venue or the ticket agency associated with the venue because it's this barcode that determines if your ticket is legitimate and the only one who can determine if it's a legitimate barcode is the venue.

"The only way for you to know 100 percent is to purchase it through the venue or the promoter who is selling those tickets. Otherwise you're taking a risk," says Maher.

It's a risk many people in Syracuse don't seem willing to take. On his way to class, SU Sophomore, Andrew Chung, says he never buys tickets online.

"I've heard bad stories about people buying tickets on Craigslist so I try to stay away from that kind of website," says Chung.

Bruce Downey who works in Rochester, but lives in Syracuse, says he gets his tickets from Ticketmaster.

"With Ticketmaster you get to pick your seats and of course they are an authorized dealer so anything on Stubhub or Craigslist or something like that you really don't know what's going on," says Downey.

If you do buy from a secondary source, Stubhub tends to be more reliable according to Maher.

"They provide you a guarantee and you certainly have a bigger corporation and a bigger reach to go back and work with as opposed to trying to deal one on one with someone who sold them to you on Ebay or Craigslist," says Maher.

To make sure you're getting the real deal, stay skeptical and stick to a reliable source before you become the next victim of a scam.
