The 2008 United Way fundraising campaign kicked off with a cook-off at the CNY Regional Market today.  Teams from local businesses and non-profit organizations competed in six food categories with winners selected by votes from attendees.  The Cook-Off is a great way for the organizations that run campaigns to get charged up for the year’s fundraising and to have some fun at the same time.
ONONDAGA COUNTY --
Campaign Chair Kathryn Ruscitto highlighted the event with the announcement of this year’s goal of $9.1 million. Ruscitto explained, “This is not an abstract number.  This is the bottom line amount we must raise to continue our funding commitments for next year.  Over the next weeks and months, our job is to rally the community to get the job done.”

New this year is the Million Marker sweepstakes which will award ten $300.00 gas cards from United Way’s e-newsletter subscribers.

In the past funding year, United Way donors helped 624 children receive support for their disabilities, 4,173 military service people through emergencies and 4,010 youth to be enrolled in safe after school programs.
