SYRACUSE -- Saturday is National Adoption Day and more than 300 adoptions will take place in all 50 states around the nation. Here in Onondaga County 39 new families were born Friday afternoon in an event which took place at the Oncenter in Syracuse. Nine judges oversaw the event, which filled the convention center's ballroom. Children in ages ranging from six months to 20 years old were adopted, and there was even a set of triplets.
Currently there are 381 children in foster care in Onondaga County. Last year 67 parents took home new family members and this year the County is hoping more people will want to get involved.
At Friday's event several speakers including people involved in foster care, adopted children, and former foster parents had a chance to tell their stories. Congressman Jim Walsh was also on hand to present a flag flown over the Capital to one family.
The event was moved to the Oncenter because of the record number of adoptions this year.
