FLEMING, CAYUGA CO. -- The search continues for a drowning victim on Owasco Lake. On Wednesday, a special team of New York State Police resumed their search for 46-year-old Thomas Goff. They were armed with special new digital sonar equipment to aid in the search.

It was about a month ago when Goff went under and never came back up. He was out on the lake with his family with his wife and two grandchildren on a tube behind the boat. But their day of family fun turned into tragedy when a wave flipped the tube. Goff jumped in without a life vest to help his wife and grandkids. That was the last time he was seen alive. "We believe the victim is in very deep water and we're utilizing side-scan sonar to try to pinpoint his location," said Sgt. Alvaro Garcia of the New York State Police.

Several previous searches, so far, have turned up nothing. Two of the biggest challenges are a vast search area and the 120 to 150 foot depth. "There's different witness accounts that are quite spread out," Sgt. Garcia said. "If we had a more specific area, it'd be a little easier for us. The problem here is that it's stretch out over about one and a half to two mile stretch."

It's been exactly 31 days since Thomas Goff disappeared. The hope now is to finally find him and give his family the closure they so desperately need. "We want to bring closure that they need and we're just looking to be successful, but it's just very difficult," said Trooper Karl Bloom. As for whether they'll find anything, no one can really say. The team of specially-trained police can only hope they find what they're looking for. "We don't know until we know. We keep hope that every pass we make, it's gonna be the pass," said Trooper Bloom.

Until then, a family waits for word to finally find some sense of peace.
