MANLIUS -- The government and Consumer Protection Safety Commission issued a warning for parents or anyone who has small children in their home. The government has recalled more than 50 million Roman-style and roll up shades saying, they pose a safety risk to children.
At J&S Drapery and Design Center they sell lots of the Roman type shades.
President, Jeffrey Solomon said, "They are a hot seller."
There are new recommendations for parents who own these kind of shades.
Solomon said, "What they're afraid of is that the child gets underneath the shade and although it's a single cord, there're able to catch their head between the body of the shade and that cord therefore creating a loop and noose like situation."
That's exactly what happened to Collier Ursprung. His father, Dr. Robert Ursprung said, "We scurried across the room to find him standing in his crib with the cord
from the shade near his bed wrapped around his neck and he was unable to get out of it - and was struggling and tugging to get out of it."
His parents caught the problem in time but the shade cords left ligature marks around his neck.
For the recalled shades, there are retrofit kits available for free. Even better, cordless shades are recommended for homes with small children.
Solomon said, "Keeping safety in mind I guess, whether it be your window treatments or a seat belt in your automobile or whatever the case may be. Things hopefully get better and safer over time. This is no different than that."
At J& S Drapery, they also recommend keeping kids cribs, beds, and toys away from any shades with cords.
