The Tompkins County SPCA is looking for donations to help feed its animals.

The shelter feeds upwards of 300 animals a day. Tompkins County SPCA Executive Director Abigail Smith says the shelter spent $60,000 on pet food last year and they still needed donations to help them feed all of the animals.

"In terms of thousands of pounds that come through the shelter it is tens of thousands of pounds we need each year," Smith says.

The Tompkins County SPCA was one of the first "no kill" shelters in the county, Smith says they work hard to find homes for all the animals who are brought here.

"It's really heartbreaking to see people come to the shelter and surrender their animals simply because they're a victim of this economy and they can't afford to feed them," Smith says.

The SPCA is running a special "Home for the Holidays" pet adoption drive. So far 190 pets have been adopted out to new homes.
