Penn Traffic employees soon to be unemployed
SYRACUSE -- Penn Traffic warehouse workers in Syracuse are in their final days on the job. Employees there have been notified warehouse operations are shutting down at the end of this week. P&C supermarkets sold the buildings to C&S Wholesalers a couple of years ago. C&S continued operations with Penn Traffic employees, but under the new sales agreement with Tops Markets, C&S will no longer operate out of Syracuse.
Workers have been told a skeleton staff will completely empty the building after the majority of the workers are done. Warehouse workers are represented by Teamsters Local 317, which has already organized meetings to inform displaced workers about their options.
P&C store workers are continuing to meet with Tops executives to receive job offers from the new owner of the supermarket chain. The offers coming to store employees are typically a twenty percent pay cut from the previous wages under Penn Traffic ownership.
Tops is in a one month period of assessing which stores it intends to keep open.
