To be sung in English, but with projected titles
The debate over 'Hansel and Gretel' is whether it's a children's production or an 'adult' opera. Syracuse Opera's Director of Music Douglas Kinney Frost says it can be both: the fairy tale is a great introduction to opera for children, and actually includes singing by the forty members of Syracuse Opera's Children's Chorus. But the composer, Engelbert Humperdinck, was a contemporary of, and follower of Richard Wagner, and Kinney Frost says it's 'grownup opera.' It will be sung in English, but there will also be supertitles projected above the stage.
Syracuse Opera's production is Friday at 8 and Sunday (April 25) at 2 in the Mulroy Civic Center. www.syracuseopera.com
