POMPEY -- A local alpaca farm is helping clean up the Gulf Coast with extra fleece from its herd.

Springside Farm in Pompey has already donated more than 50 pounds of fleece from its herd and they hope to donate another 200 pounds by the time shearing season is over.

Paulie Drexler says the Alpaca fleece from her farm is perfect for soaking up oil in the Gulf. "There isn't anything more natural than the hair cut from an Alpaca," Drexler says. "It's very dry.  Alpaca have no lanolin so there is a lot they can suck up in there. More so than wool which does contain a certain amount of grease," she says.

So far, Alpaca farmers across the country have donated more than 10,000 pounds of fleece to be used in the Gulf Coast clean-up. The fleece will be put into nylon stockings and put into boons to protect the coastline. Drexler says she's happy to help."Anything we can do to help, and this is a good soaker upper,  than that is where it should go," she says.
