Like most two year olds, Little Chuck likes to be the center of attention.

Little Chuck, who is named after Rosamond Gifford Zoo director Chuck Doyle, gets plenty of attention at the African Lion Safari in Hamilton, Canada. The animal preserve is a temporary home for Little Chuck, his mother Mali and grandmother Targa. The three Asian Elephants are on loan here while the Rosamond Gifford Zoo expands its own elephant preserve.

Doyle couldn't be happier with the newest addition to the zoo's family. "We're just ecstatic to see three generations coming out of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, even if it is third generation coming out of the African Lion Safari," Doyle says.

Life is pretty good for the elephants at the African Lion Safari. There is plenty to eat and plenty to do. Safari elephant director Charlie Gray says Little Chuck is never very far from his mother and grandmother's side. "Mali and Targa are always together and they really look after Little Chuck. Chuck he's a little independent but they always know where he is and they're very interested in what he's doing," Gray says.

A lot of people are interested in what Little Chuck is doing. The African Lion Safari is one of the leading breeders of Asian Elephants in the world. Charlie Gray says the interest in Little Chuck helps raise public awareness about the endangered elephants. "That's what we try to do, is educate people and show them what wonderful animals they really are,” he says.

If all goes as planned, Little Chuck, Mali and Targa will be back at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo when the new elephant preserve opens its doors next summer.

In the meantime if you want to see Little Chuck or his family you will have to take a trip north of the border.
