CAMILLUS -- People got a behind the scenes look at a controversial plan in Camillus Wednesday night. The Department of Environmental Conservation and Honeywell held a public tour of Wastebed 13. About half a dozen people took part.
Part of the Onondaga Lake cleanup plan includes dumping contaminated sediment from the lake into Wastebed 13. A pipeline will bring sediment from the lake to the field.
Neighbors fought against the proposal for months, saying the sediment would be dangerous to the area. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency ruled sediment from the lake is safe for people living near Wastebed 15.
The DEC says the lake dredging project will start in May of 2012. When the dredging is done five years later, the DEC says Wastebed 13 is safe enough to even become a park, with trails or recreational fields.
Construction at Wastebed 13 will start in August to get ready for the dredging project.
