DEWITT -- DeWitt Police are warning residents involving a phone scam. Police say they have received calls about a phone scam that involves the same series of numbers coming from the “502” area code. Read the press release below.
"In recent weeks DeWitt Police Department has received calls in reference to a telephone scam that involves the same series of numbers coming from the “502” area code. In one case, the person calling the resident asked to verify his personal information in order to be eligible to win a free computer at Best Buy. In another case, the caller advised that they provide deals on home improvements to include installing windows, doors and siding and needed his personal information for a quote.
The number used in these cases was (502) 000-9912. A search under the directory of Unknown Callers Website showed that the “502” area code is sometimes used because calling from a local access number is cheaper than calling from a toll free number. It appears that there have been numerous scam victims with calls coming from this area code nationwide. In our cases, many calls appear to be originating from Canada.
Please remember that legitimate businesses usually do not call you to verify personal information. Detailed personal information should be given in person if possible, when necessary, and to a trusted business/person. It should only be given out over the phone if you initiated the call to a known business/person and the information should be limited. If you have an issue with any potential scams they should be reported to police immediately. "
