"I'll never understand why people get so bent out of shape about this issue," one person wrote to us at CNYcentral.com. All week, it has been one of the most commented on stories on CNYcentral.com. Now, the federal judge who struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage is being urged to allow the marriages to resume immediately. Motions calling for the resumption have been filed by lawyers for gay couples, California Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown. The stories posted at CNYcentral.com show the passion on both sides of the issue.
One person who visited our website wrote, "The homosexuals aren't going out and kidnapping straight people and forcing them to get married against their will. If you don't like the idea of it, then don't marry someone of the same sex or worship in a church that allows same sex weddings.
One person on the other side of the debate says the issue of gay marriage will play a big role in the next election cycle, "The president believes that "Government knows best" which is exactly why no consideration to the voice of the people was considered as demonstrated today by (the judge in the case) Vaughn Walker. What constitutes a legal marriage should be decided on a state by state basis since the states issue the licenses."
Others believe the issue boils down to human rights with one saying, "Although there were no restrooms for straights and gays, homosexual people were treated cruelly. Until 1973, highly regarded medical and mental-health groups in America believe homosexuality is a disorder. Then President Eisenhower allowed federal employees to be fired because they are gay or lesbian. To compare homosexuality to murder is offensive and 100 percent inaccurate."
