"This is a blatantly wrong and was performed by some anti-gun zealot either in the State Police or one of our misguided politicians," one person wrote to us at CNYcentral.com. No story this week has generated more debate on this website than the one reported by Jim Kenyon on a newly published list of everyone who has ever been issued a pistol permit in New York State.
The information on this website was obtained under Freedom of Information Laws and was received from New York State Police, which maintains the pistol permit database.
"If all the gun owners are registered and on public display wouldn't be easier for criminals to figure out which house wouldn't have a gun," one person against the website wrote to us. But there is another side to the story. Those who don't see the website as a privacy violation say, "If you are so concerned that "THEY ARE WATCHING YOU," why do you want to give the government, and especially the police, more secrecy powers. Wow, think it through a bit. An open government is a safer government."
