After a massive egg recall was expanded Wednesday, there have been some concerns about the safety of our food supply, but the questions aren't new.
A bill to overhaul the food safety system is moving through the Senate right now. Last week, the bill passed in a Senate committee, and will move to the full Senate. Another version has already been approved by the House.
The bill would give the Food and Drug Administration mandatory recall authority. Senate leaders say the bill "will place more emphasis on prevention of food borne illness and will provide new tools to respond to food safety problems." The Senate version of the bill has gained support from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and family farm groups, but those same groups are against the House version
While the bill works its way through Congress, there are things you can do to help protect your food. For example, when cooking meat, use a thermometer to make sure it gets to the proper temperature. Make sure you're not buying bruised or damaged produce. If it's fresh cut, it should be stored in ice or a refrigerated area. Click here for more tips and more information on food safety.
