This year, just one shot can help shield you from 3 flu viruses, including h1n1.

For Heidi Mcglory, it's a little prick, and she's armed against the flu, for the whole season.

She says it's not only to protect herself, but the people around her too. "To stay healthy and it's very important to protect yourself. Everyday I come in contact with hundreds of patients and I encourage everyone to get their flu shot," she said.

"If you have risk factors, it's a must and even if you don't you must know someone who does and you can help prevent transmission. Plus being sick for a week really isn't fun," said Physicians Assistant Brynne Noskoat North Medical Family Physicians.

Doctor offices, and pharmacies across Central New York already have their shelves stocked with flu vaccines, about a month earlier than usual.

And this year, one shot will ward off more flu viruses. "It has the h1n1 the h3n1 and the influenza b, and it takes two weeks for the immunity to develop so even if you get your shots now you won't be protected until the beginning of October," said Nosco.

October is when flu season really ramps up. Nosco says in the U.S. 5% to 20% of people get the flu every year. But the risk of becoming sick could lower if people get vaccinated early, before germs have a chance to spread.
