A new poll shows a tight race for governor. Republican Carl Paladino is gaining ground on Democrat Andrew Cuomo, that's according to a new Quinnipiac poll. The poll shows Cuomo leading Paladino 49 percent to 43 percent among likely voters. Seven percent were undecided.
So what does this show? According to Jeff Stonecash, a Maxwell professor of political science at Syracuse University, it shows people are looking for something different.
Stonecash says there's a lot of anger and fear out there and people are concerned about unemployment. That will be on New Yorker's minds when they decide who to vote for in November.
"It's not an anti Andrew Cuomo vote, it's just I want something different and maybe this guy will do it," Stonecash said.
He says Cuomo has been playing the race like he's going to win and hasn't said much about what he'll do while Paladino has been blunt. Last week Paladino, a Buffalo developer, won the republican primary against Rick Lazio. Andrew Cuomo is the state attorney general, he was elected to that position in 2006.
"I think people want something different," Stonecash said. "Spitzer was a huge disappointment, Pateron's been a major dis-appointment. I think people feel like the system just rolls on and they aren't going to get anything different and they'll go embrace this guy they don't know."
Professor Stonecash says while he was a little surprised by the results of the poll, he thinks Cuomo will come out and be more vocal in the race. On Wednesday Cuomo picked up endorsement of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent.
