SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Common Council has decided not to take action on a Police Department request to set up cameras to monitor crime on the city's west side.

Councilors say they need more time to study the issue and hear neighborhood concerns about the surveillance cameras.

The local head of the New York Civil Liberties Union says the cameras raise constitutional concerns.

The Police Department wanted to install the surveillance cameras on utility poles to monitor streets for potential criminal activity.
