Pantry outreach is turning people away
The Central New York SPCA says it's 'a bit of a struggle' feeding all its animals, because donations are down.
Executive Director Paul Morgan says specifically, they're dealing with the loss of their biggest supporter, the P&C Distribution Center, which used to provide a van-full of food on a weekly basis. Now, the shelter is having to buy food, costing $1500 - $2,000 monthly, for the first time in ten years.
There are about 180 cats and 70+ dogs in the shelter, and feeding them is the first priority. But, the SPCA's outreach project, a pantry that provides pet food to people in tough economic situations, is also suffering: Morgan says that normally food 'left over' from the shelter goes on its shelves, but these days those shelves are almost bare and people who come in are being turned away. Morgan does not want to close the shelter, but says that until the supply situation is better, there won't be much available to pet owners.
Donations are being requested. Morgan says high quality pet food---like Pedigree, IAMS, and Purina--along with newspapers and blankets are appreciated. You can drop off at the shelter, on East Molloy Road in Mattydale.
And, if you use Blue Seal feeds (any kind), the shelter is also collecting the proofs of purchase on the bags to get discounts on the food it buys. www.cnyspca.org has more information, as well as a look at pets for adoption.
