Solar tsunami

A solar tsunami developed late yesterday on the far-side of the sun.  Check out the video here.  See the “waves” spreading out from that eruption?  The culprit is an older sunspot, number 1109.  Thanks to NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft, we are able to observe eruptions like this, even when they are completely invisible from earth!   This particular eruption also caused a “CME”, or coronal mass ejection.

Do you have a solar filter and watch the sun?  Do you have any cool (or in this case, “hot”) pictures you’ve taken of the sun through that solar filter?  Remember, you can only safely observe the sun with an appropriate solar filter-NEVER look at the sun without the appropriate safeguards (sunglasses are NOT appropriate safeguards).  If you do have any great pictures, feel free to pass them along!
