AUBURN (AP) -- One upstate New York police department's loss is another law enforcement agency's gain.
The Ulster County Sheriff's Department now owns the Humvee the U.S. Army gave to the Auburn Police Department last month.
Auburn police received the vehicle September 30 from Fort Drum through a military surplus program for law enforcement agencies. But the next day, Auburn City Manager Mark Palesh ordered the vehicle returned because it didn't fit the department's needs.
Palesh says the Humvee has a machine gun turret but could only fit four people inside, including the driver.
Auburn police say they intended to use the Humvee as a replacement for the 23-year-old converted ambulance used by the department's SWAT team.
Ulster County took ownership of the vehicle earlier this month.
