SYRACUSE -- The city of Syracuse has started replacing curbs at eight intersections throughout the city based on complaints from the disabled.

Syracuse DPW Commissioner Pete O’Connor also confirms the city cited Crouse Hospital earlier this year based on a complaint that its sidewalk on the 600 block of Irving Avenue was badly in need of repair.

Most of the complaints were brought by disabled advocate Anne Woodlen, who took O’Connor on what she calls a "walk and wheel" in the University and hospital zone.  Woodlen says there are many areas where sidewalks and curb cuts are so bad she’s forced to ride her wheelchair in the street.  O’Connor says the city is paying a contractor $72,000 to replace curb cuts at eight intersections, mostly in the hospital zone.

O’Connor also confirms in June, the city condemned sidewalks surround the Crouse Hospital parking lot in the 600 block of Irving Avenue.

Crouse spokesman Bob Allen says the hospital submitted a proposal to correct the problem to the city and, beginning in April, will replace the sidewalks surrounding the parking lot.  Allen says they have budgeted $90,000 in their 2011 capital budget to fix the problem.

O’Connor says when the city receives a complaint violating the Americans with Disabilities Act they will respond.
