SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Common Council is accepting resumes to fill a vacant seat after a councilor decided to leave his post to take a job with City Hall.

Common Councilor-at-large Bill Ryan is resigning his seat to take a position with the city as Mayor Stephanie Miner’s Director of Administration. The 56-year-old Ryan will begin his new job in January.

Ryan’s departure from the Council leaves a vacancy that his fellow councilors will fill. Majority Leader Kathleen Joy has sent a notice soliciting resumes for the position, which must be submitted to the Council by December 20.

“The people of the City of Syracuse were well served by Councilor Bill Ryan during his time on the Common Council” said Joy in a statement to the media. “We look forward to continuing that relationship in his new role as Director of Administration under Mayor Stephanie Miner.”

A Common Councilor-at-large represents the entire city, instead of just one specific district. The person selected by the Council to fill Ryan’s seat will serve out the rest of his term, which runs through December 2011. An election for a full term will take place on November 8, 2011.

The Director of Administration oversees many departments in City Hall, including personnel, budget, finance, assessment, research, and others.
