SYRACUSE -- Homeowners looking to take advantage of federal tax credits for making their homes more energy efficient need to act fast.
The tax credit program ends on December 31st. Ellis Guiles of TAG Mechanical says his company has seen an increase in customers looking to take advantage of the tax credits before they expire.
"People are finally realizing, 'wait a minute - I have been hearing about this thing for almost two years now and now the deadline is coming, maybe I better start taking some action'," he says.
Qualifying homeowners can get up to $1,500 back on their taxes. Guiles says homeowners who add insulation and upgrade their heating and water heaters can see major savings on their heating bills.
"It's not unusual to help people lower their energy usage by 25 to 30 percent and even more if your house is kind of in tough energy shape," he says.
In addition to the tax credits, homeowners who qualify can also apply for low interest loans and grants from New York State to help them make their homes more energy efficient.
