CORTLAND -- Students at Tompkins Cortland Community College are signing a pledge which some say will improve town relations in and around the City of Cortland.

The "panther pledge" commits the student to a "positive living and learning environment." It includes adhering to a code of conduct which can be enforced both on-campus and off.

The City of Cortland is in the midst of a struggle among residents, students, and landlords over students behavior in off-campus neighborhoods.

TC3 has seen significant growth in the last five years which requires a number of students to live in and around the City of Cortland.

One of the students who signed the pledge, Amanda Nicolas, says "It adds that little bit of responsibility to everyone to act as an individual in a bigger community."

TC3 Director of Student Activities Deb Mohlenhoff says the pledge was actually written by a student.  She says about 200 students have signed it so far.
