City of Sherrill searches for Police Chief following scandal

SHERRILL -- The City of Sherrill is going public with its search for a new police chief.

The city recently posted this ad as it searches for a new face to head its police department. It comes after quite a bit of controversy. Just last month, Chief James Hastings was let go following a disciplinary hearing. He's been surrounded by scandal after his 6-year-old grandson allegedly overdosed on methamphetamine while in his care last February. Hastings' son Jason is facing criminal charges in the case.

Chief Hastings was initially placed on paid leave while city leaders investigated, and was just recently forced out.

Drug enforcement investigators say Jason Hastings bought large quantities of ephedrine which is used to make meth. Stephen Sgarlata, the father of the 6-year-old boy who overdosed, later filed a notice of claim against nine people and municipalities.

The City of Sherrill's website lists the Police Chief position it's looking to fill, saying the candidate should be "an active part of the community both as a professional and a citizen." One of the general expectations of the position, the posting explicitly states, is someone who "ensures compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations." The position pays between $63,365 and $67,843 a year.

Applications will be received until 4:00 p.m. Friday April 1, 2011. Click here to apply.
