New course helps Shamrock Run deal with crowds

Saturday morning, about 3,000 runners will pace themselves through Tipperary Hill's streets for the annual Shamrock Run

"It's going to be fun. The first mile is fast it's all downhill, we're going to blow that out. Then the last mile is all up hill so that will be painful, but that's what we are here for right?," said Doug Carbino.

The event got so big this year, the course changed a bit.  In years past, runners would criss cross at certain intersections.  But with more people running, organizers say they didn't want to run that risk.  You can look at race route here

William Hoyne won the race last year and says he's been training on the new course.  "Winter is nearly over and it's a chance to run hard," said Hoyne.  Last year was the Ireland native's first time in the race. He finished the 4 mile trek in 20 minutes and 53 seconds. "It's kind of exciting, there is a lot of green, a lot of fun, good costumes and up front there are a lot of good runners," he said. Hoyne hopes months of tough training will give him the leg up to beat his time Saturday.

But everyone in this race, has their own strategy.  "I'm going to run like there is a bear chasing me," said Derek Gorski who is running the race for the first time. "My expectations are to be real tired."

The race raises tens of thousands of dollars each year. Last year, it brought in $24,000. "The money all goes to different charities but the purpose is to benefit our community and the beautification project we have," said Race Chair Eileen McAndrews.

"It's a fun race. Lot of people cheering you on, and then you go out for some drinks afterwards," said runner Kristen Mullally.

Once the crowds clear out from the streets, it's the local bars and restaurants on Tipp Hill that get busy. Coleman's says it will serve double the amount of customers Saturday. "It's a great way to show off tipp hill. We're very grateful to the organizers for keeping this going," said Manager Dennis Coleman.

If you are driving in the area tomorrow, you may have to take some detours. Coleridge avenue, between Lowell and Avery avenues, will be closed from 10 AM until noon. Drivers will also see traffic disruptions on several tipp hill streets throughout the race.
