A little ice was a big problem for St. Louis traffic on Wednesday February 23 of this year.
The St Louis Missouri area received only .10 inches of freezing rain. This little amount of ice caused numerous complications for travelers on the road. The freezing rain started around 4:00am and only lasted for an hour and half.
A 31 one-car pileup occurred on interstate 64 at 5:00am. 21 people were injured from this crash; one person’s injuries were serious, the remaining victims suffered minor injuries.
St Louis Fire Captain Dan Sutter said, “This is the worst [accident] I’ve seen in years as an emergency responder. I have never seen anything of this magnitude.”
Jeff Wilson Cpl., a Missouri Highway patrol officer said troopers responded to up to 60 related car accidents in St Charles, Lincoln and St. Louis counties; thankfully, none of which resulted in fatalities. The worst accident they saw was the 31 car pileup that the St. Louis police responded to.
Luckily, the ice melted as the day progressed into warmer temperatures, which eventually approached 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
