ALBANY (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says the federal Environmental Protection Agency is agreeing to exempt milk from provisions of the Clean Water Act that required extensive red tape over spilled milk.
A 2002 revision in the 1970 law required commercial enterprises including dairy farms to have plans to deal with spills of product and chemical in a similar manner required of oil companies.
Milk had been part of the precautions because it contains animal fat, which is an oil.
Schumer had urged the federal agency to clarify the measure last summer.
