SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse woman has been indicted on charges after allegedly hitting an elderly woman with a van late last year.

According to the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office, a Grand Jury indicted 26-year-old Tamara Gerald of Maple Terrace on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, falsely reporting an incident, making a punishable false written statement, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, perjury, and use of a mobile phone.

Police say Gerald was driving a Rent-A-Center van when she hit 76-year-old Eva Calventa of Gifford Street on November 30 at the intersection of Wyoming and Gifford Streets. Police allege Gerald drove away from the accident scene and left Calventa lying in the street. Calventa later died from a head injury.

Investigators say Gerald called 911 after the crash to let police know Calventa had been hit, but she didn't tell them she was the driver. The rental company also notified 911 that their van had been involved in a crash on the same date as the incident.
