LIVERPOOL -- Take a look at Moyers Corners firefighters these days and you'll notice something a bit different -- they're all growing mustaches.

"It's different, you definitely know it's there, especially when you're not use to wearing one normally," said Lieutenant Michael Hoosock.

"It's interesting seeing it out of the corner of my eye or when I'm looking down," said Battalion 1 Chief Stephen Zaferakis.

28 firefighters in the department are competing in this month-long, mustache growing contest.  For firefighters, it's a nice change of pace from their day to day routine.

"All too often we're seeing people on their worst day -- we don't really get to interact with them in a fun way," said Hoosock.  "Now they see us out, they see us at the fire houses, they see the mustaches -- and they know us and know we're not use to having these too (and) it's fun to see their reactions to them."

Firefighters said this contest has brought a lot of fun to the four stations, but they know all the money raised is going toward a very serious cause -- the Burn Foundation of Central New York, which provides support for burn survivors and their families.

"We see some of the worst things you can imagine and just to give back to the people who need it and are in that position -- it feels great," said Lieutenant Joseph Montague.

The contest ends at the end of the month -- and so far, firefighters have raised a few thousand dollars.  They say they'd like to see the contest grow even larger next year, incorporating other fire departments and law enforcement agencies.
