AURELIUS, CAYUGA CO. -- A boil water advisory and conservation order are in effect for the Village of Cayuga and Town of Aurelius Water District #3.

Word of it is just coming to CNY Central from the Cayuga County Health Department.

The advisories affect for people along State Route 90 in the Town of Aurelius due to high turbidity levels.

Turbidity is a measurement of water clarity. The high levels in the plant are due to elevated turbidity levels in Cayuga Lake following recent rain.

If you live in the affected area, you shouldn't drink Village water without boiling it first or just use bottled water to drink, make ice, brush your teeth, wash dishes and prepare food until further notice.

The boil water order will be lifted when the turbidity returns to appropriate levels and water samples confirm there's no contamination in the system. Right now, it appears the advisory will remain in effect until at least next week.

In the meantime, the Health Department asking people in the affected area to conserve water so the water treatment plant's operation can be reduced.
