MACDOUGALL, SENECA CO. -- Seneca County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a serious accident that sent six people to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Deputies say 21-year-old Matthew Campbell, of Waterloo, was driving a pick up truck eastbound on State Route 336 around 3:40 p.m. Police say he pulled into the path of a car on State Route 96, driven by 76-year-old James Shepherd of Seneca Falls.

Both cars ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

Shepherd and his passenger, 54-year-old Rodney Shepherd of Hawley Street in Seneca Falls, were trapped in the vehicle for about 45 minutes. They were extricated and flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Campbell was also airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Three passengers in Campbell's car, 16-year-old Daniel Kennedy of Waterloo, 21-year-old Kyle Merkley of Palmyra, and 20-year-old Bradley Welch of Geneva were taken to Geneva General Hospital for treatment.

Traffic was detoured for about an hour and a half while deputies investigated the crash.

Campbell was charged with failure to yield the right of way. Police say other charges are pending in the case.
