MANLIUS, NY -- Before Tuesday night's community forum even started in Manlius, Joy Virden and some new friends waited outside with signs and petitions asking Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle to leave Medicare alone.
Virden was concerned that Buerkle would support severe cuts to Medicare that could leave her children and grandchildren without vital care in the future.
"She just seems to want to chop it away," said Virden.
Inside the forum, Bob Murfit was also thinking about grandchildren. Murfit is in favor of changes to Medicare and said he doesn't want future generations to be stuck paying for a flawed, unsustainable system.
"The Obama plan, Obamacare deletes $500 billion from Medicare starting in 2014. So it's going. The way it's going now, it's not going to last," said Murfit.
Amy Zamkoff said she disagrees with Buerkle's stance on Medicare and even disagrees with some of the current statistics and numbers that come up in debate.
"I think one of the things that's most important is that all of us are very careful about information. That statement - you can have your own opinion but you can't have your own facts."
As she prepared to take questions, Congresswoman Buerkle said misinformation and fear-mongering regarding Medicare reform was hurting seniors.
"I think it's really not fair to the seniors to make them think we're yanking their Medicare out from under them when really we're proposing something that will make Medicare sustainable."
Both sides there will be a lot of debate and negotiation before any final changes are made to Medicare.
