SYLVAN BEACH --

Two popular swimming spots are once again open for business.

Oneida County officials announced Tuesday afternoon that Sylvan Beach is back open, and Wednesday the State Parks Department confirmed that Verona Beach has followed suit.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente says testing determined the blue-green algae that was in Oneida Lake had dissipated, and toxin levels are no longer a public health risk.

"My first responsibility, and that of the Health Department, is to protect public health," Picente said. "I am happy to be able to report that the County Health Department in consultation with the NYS Department of Health has determined that as of today the blue-green algae bloom has dissipated and cyanobacteria toxin levels are no longer a public health risk."

Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach had been closed to swimmers since last Thursday because of the algae.

When Verona Beach reopened around 5pm on Wednesday. Holly Hamilton and her family were among the first to hit the water. Up until then, their vacation had consisted of looking at the cool, refreshing and closed beach as temperatures climbed into the 80s.

"There was no breeze and we just wanted to go swimming and we weren't able to," said Hamilton. "Actually we were considering cancelling the rest of the trip but we didn't and we're thankful now."

Some swimmers just happened to have perfect timing. Dave Fitzgerald and his family are crossing New York state by bicycle and pulled into Verona Beach just moments after the swimming area reopened.

"You're hot you're sweaty, you look forward to getting cooled off - you want to jump in a lake," said Fitzgerald.

Picente says the Village of Sylvan Beach will work closely with the State Health Department to monitor for the potential of any more algae blooms.
