SYRACUSE -- A staple of the summer season is the downtown Syracuse farmers market. The rows of fresh produce and other farm products for sale in Clinton Square is a popular destination for neighbors.
But there's a site at the farmer's market that may have you thinking lake effect snow, Christmas Carols and holly. Those red kettles and bell ringers that are a part of the Christmas holiday landscape have popped up at the farmer's market.
The Salvation Army tells us that its part of their Christmas in July campaign. The agency says need knows no season, and that demand for their services is year round and on the increase. For example, the Salvation Army reports its food pantry served 47% more meals for the first five months of 2011 than it did for the same period last year. So it needs donations to keep pace with demand.
And its not just the farmer's market where the organization is hoping to raise funds this summer. Wednesday is Salvation Army night at Alliance Bank Stadium--and the red kettles and bell ringers will be out at the game between the Chiefs and Columbus Clippers.
The Salvation Army is also hoping you can organize a mini food drive or red kettle campaign at your business. You can go to their web site to find out how. There's also information there on how to volunteer as a bell ringer or donate cash.
