SYRACUSE -- Local leaders are praising the installation of a, "green roof," in downtown Syracuse today. It's the latest project made possible through Onondaga County's Save the Rain green improvement fund.
Workers are currently spreading dirt on the roof of the Monroe Building near Columbus Circle on 333 East Onondaga Street. The building's owner Jeff DeRoberts was awarded a $92,832 grant for the roof project.
The intent is to replace the current roof with a garden that will absorb rain keeping it out of the storm drainage system. Officials estimate that this roof project alone will divert 100,000 gallons of storm water from eventually making its way into Onondaga Lake. Officials figure the project will be completed by the end of the year.
