Marcus Sales, Jonny Miller facing charges
SYRACUSE -- After a week of negative headlines off the field, the SU Football Team was back on the field at SU Media Day. The first order of business for Head Coach Doug Marrone was to announce the latest developments from those three negative headlines that have been surrounding the team leading up to training camp.
Wide Receiver Marcus Sales and Quarterback Jonny Miller are both suspended from the football team until further notice. Sales was arrested one week ago for allegedly speeding through a traffic light and possessing drugs. Miller was arrested on suspicion of punching and robbing a man on Wednesday.
Marrone says he met with the team concerning these two matters, and asked the players to refer all questions from the media to him. He expressed to his players not to get distracted by these particular incidents. "When things happen around you in negative situations you have to turn them into an educational experience for everyone else," explains Marrone, "so we try to do that. We have to learn from situations like this whatever they may be, but also we need to understand that we need all of our focus and attention on our football team for what we do here on the football field and for the players that are here."
Running Back Prince-Tyson Gulley attended media Day as he continues to recover after being stabbed at a party on SU's South Campus. Now a teenager is facing charges for the stabbing.
Gulley was in uniform at media day, but according to Marrone will not be able to practice for another 7 to 10 days.
"That was the past," says Gulley, "I'm just looking forward to looking towards the future and get this season started. I don't believe it really set me back, I'm still in the weight room doing stuff that I can do but not a big set back."
"It's not really something that we talk about too much," adds Sophomore Center Macky MacPherson, "just because that's something for Coach Marrone and that's his responsibility. But we're all a close knit family here and so anything that happens between us we all care for that person."
We also learned the team's offensive line coach is suffering from an undisclosed illness. Head Coach Doug Marrone will take over his responsibilities until Coach Greg Adkins recovers.
The team is coming off a win in the Pinstripe Bowl in New York City. The first game is scheduled for Thursday, September 1st, at 8pm in the Carrier Dome against Wake Forest. Click here for the team's complete schedule.
