Can you tell if an online review is real?

If you think you are pretty good at spotting fake reviews posted on online travel sites like TripAdvisor, think again.

Claire Cardie, a computer scientist with Cornell University, says when it comes to spotting fake reviews online most of us just dont know what to look for. "Don't trust your instincts as to being able to identify the truthful versus the deceptive reviews. We're just not that good at it," she says.

Cardie and her team of researchers at Cornell have come up with a new software program they say can detect a fake online review nine times out of ten. With so many reviews online, the new software is getting a lot of interest from hotels who increasingly depend on online reviews. Cardie says fake reviews tend to lack "spatial" information and that reviews that have the most details tend to be the most accurate.

"Any information about what things look like around the reviewer, where things are in relation to them. Anything describing the surroundings and how things are layed out. Those are the details to look for. Liars are not good at providing spatial information," she says.

Cardies team is still in the early stages of developing its detection software. In the meantime, she says if you're looking for a hotel online, your best bet is to go with one that has the most reviews. "There is a good chance with so many reviews you've got the right impression," she says.

Do you think you can spot fake hotel reviews better than computer software? What are some of the things you look for?
