Oneida Shores County Park has reopened for swimming after high levels of bacteria in the water caused the beach to be closed for two days.
The Onondaga County Parks Department says that the county health department cleared the lake to be reopened Friday afternoon. Coliform bacteria was found in the water Wednesday, and swimming was not allowed until bacteria levels returned to safe levels.
The rest of Oneida Shores park remained open during the swimming ban.
Coliform bacteria is a sign of increased overall bacteria in the the water, according to health officials. It could cause gastrointestinal illness. If you went swimming at Oneida Shores and feel sick, you should call your doctor immediately.
The health department also said Thursday that a pool of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus near Oneida Shores. There have been no human cases of West Nile reported so far this year.
The closure came on the heels of a nearly week-long closure of the Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach swimming areas last month. Those closures were due to a mass of blue-green algae which had washed up near shore.
Oneida Shores park is open daily until August 21.
