ALTONA, NY -- The torrential rainfall from Hurricane Irene is blamed in the death of a person from Nedrow.

Danine Swamp, 24, of Nedrow, and Mikita Fox, 23, of Wikemikong, Ontario, were driving in a 2001 Buick early Monday morning in the Town of Altona. That's just north of Plattsburgh, and about 10 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border.

Fox and Swamp were traveling north on Devils Den Road and did not notice the roadway, traversing a bridge over the Great Chazy River, was partially washed away, according to State Police.

As the vehicle tried to get onto the bridge, it was pulled into the river and carried about 1,000 feet downstream, according to police. An intensive search lead to Fox and Swamp being found out of the vehicle.

Autopsies are scheduled to take place Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center, in Plattsburgh, New York.

The Altona Fire Department, United States Border Patrol, Watertown Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team, New York State Police Aviation, Special Operations Response Team and members of the State Police Uniform and BCI all responded to the scene.
