SENECA CO. -- Be careful the next time you pick up the phone. Seneca County officials are warning about a new phone scam.

Seneca County Sheriff's deputies are investigating several complaints about the scam. Here's what deputies say happens: The victims are contacting by "Publishing Clearing House," not to be confused with Publisher's Clearing House. The caller tells the person they've won $5 million and a new car.

Deputies say the calls originate from Jamaica, using the phone number (876) 869-2952 and the caller has a foreign accent. They also use historical or biblical names to identify themselves. Some of the names include Moses, Abraham, John Kennedy and Martha Washington. The caller asks the person to send them $300 or more via Western Union and to assist in paying taxes or fees on the millions of dollars they've won. The caller asks the person to wire the money to Jamaica in the name of Mr. Anderson.

Deputies say the scam artists then tells the victims once the money is sent, a Sheriff's deputy will deliver the winnings along with a spokesperson for the "Publishing Clearing House."

Investigators say the scammers are diligent, calling victims several times a day.

Deputies urge you never to give out any personal information over the phone or send any money.

Sheriff's deputies remind you they are never involved with collecting or delivering sweepstakes winnings. If you receive one of these calls, call police.
