NORTH SYRACUSE -- Taxpayers have approved a roof renovation project in the North Syracuse Central School District.

The vote passed with 620 yes votes and 217 no votes.

In total, the project will cost about $3.8 million. The bulk of that cost would be covered by state funding. Taxpayers would be responsible for about $400,000. That means a homeowner with a home assessed at $100,000 would be responsible for a tax increase of about $1.95.

Right now, district officials say some of the roofs in the district date back to the 1980s. Now, 30 years later, the district has been studying the condition of those roofs and has developed a replacement plan.

The current replacement plan began in the summer of 2005. It included roof repairs on seven schools. Wednesday's vote includes repairs to Gillette Road Middle School, Roxboro Road Middle School, and the Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

The work would be completed during the summer to avoid conflicting with classes.
